October 18th - KAP at Bixby Bridge
Henry Jebe and me wanted to try Bixby bridge. We had seen some fantastic pictures by Grand Master C.Benton and were inspired. Despite warnings about difficult wind conditions, we tried. First, we launched our kites at the parking lot near the bridge. But as soon as the kites were a few meters high, turbulances tossed them around and made them uncontrollable. Henry continued to try and nearly got his kite stuck dozens of meters down the ridge. I walked 100 meters northward to the next bend of the road where the north wind came around clear and constant. Launch was no problem, but I had to walk back nearer to the bridge which brought my kite line above a power line. I couldn't get on the other side of those cables, so I tried to stay on the other side of the road to be as far from them as possible. Nonetheless, I managed to get the kite below the power line, i.e. my kite line lying on the power line. Fortunately, as I am writing this, my gear and me survived, but I had some very tense moments. Conclusion: NEVER fly above power lines! After all this, lacking video feedback (always a good excuse ...), I only got a partial picture of the bridge. But some of the other pictures looked interesting enough for me to include them here.
